Repointing — sometimes just called chimney pointing — is the single most common chimney repair we carry out in Leeds. Decades of Yorkshire freeze-thaw cycles crack and wash out mortar joints, and once water gets behind the face of the stack, damage accelerates fast. Repointing done properly means raking the failed joints out to a sound depth, then repointing in a mortar that suits the building: lime or NHL mortar for Victorian and Edwardian brick and stone stacks (so the masonry can breathe), and a suitable sand-cement mix on modern chimneys. A hard cement mortar slapped over a soft-brick Victorian stack is one of the most common bodges we're asked to put right — it traps moisture and spalls the brick faces off.
Most Leeds stacks can be fully repointed in one to two days once the scaffold is up, and a properly repointed chimney should then be good for decades.
The junction where the chimney meets the roof is the most common source of "chimney leaks" — often the stack itself is fine and it's the lead flashing that has failed. Tell-tale signs are damp on the chimney breast after rain, staining on ceilings near the stack, and visibly lifted or cracked lead. We repair and renew chimney flashings in proper code-4 UK-rolled lead: stepped flashings chased into the mortar joints on the sides, a front apron, and a back gutter behind the stack — the piece that fails most often and the one cheap repairs usually skip.
