Whoever does your roof, these are the things worth checking before the scaffold comes down. We’re happy to walk you round them on our own jobs.

• Lead flashing — dressed tight to the roof and chimney, tucked into the mortar joints and pointed in, not stuck on with sealant or flashing tape.
• Chimney pointing — joints filled flush and consistent, and lime mortar on older stone where the original was lime.
• Slates and tiles — straight courses, no cracked or loose pieces, and new work matching the old where it shows.
• Ridges and verges — solid when pressed, with mortar or dry-fix caps neat and continuous.
• Gutters — falling towards the outlets, with no standing water and every joint sealed.
• Flat roofs — laid to a fall so water runs off, with upstands taken up the wall and finished under a flashing.
• Paperwork — a written guarantee in your hand, and photos of the finished work.
